Alternative Christmas Carol Lyrics, 2009. (Epernay)

For the past 3 years, I have been running a Festive Choir for Buns and Roses WI.

The first year I did this (2009), we had been rehearsing in the Champagne Bar, ‘Epernay’, which was a very regular haunt of mine.

To say thank you, I re-wrote the lyrics to ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ and we performed it for them.

GOD REST YOU, ALL EPERNIANS

1. God rest you merry gentle folk, let nothing you dismay
There’s lots of fun and festive treats for you in Epernay
So grab a brandy, or a beer – it’s cocktail day today!
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine, tasty mulled wine
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine

2. From Geoff, the Champagne baron, this lovely venue came
And did you know that Manchester’s got one almost the same?
He named his bars ‘Epernay’ – a champagne region’s name
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine, tasty mulled wine
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine

3. The doormen in the courtyard may have a daunting stance
But you should have a chat with them, if you can get a chance
Sam is great, and did you know that Glyn here used to dance?
See if you can get him to show you how, can you guess how?
I’ll give you a clue – the ladies would scream ‘wow!’

4. The bar men at this brilliant bar are slightly mad of mind
You’ll find them spinning back flips, and dressing up from time to time
But don’t you let that fool you – they know their booze you’ll find!
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine, tasty mulled wine
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine

5. The girls here, too, are talented – there’s no skills that they lack
Rosie, Chezza, Hannah, Lucy, (and) not forgetting Jack
Please keep them happy – tip them well, and promise to come back.
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine, tasty mulled wine
Glad tidings of champagne and mulled wine

6. And when it comes to closing time, the dreaded time to pay
You’ll find things so much easier in lovely Epernay
Just bake a cake, do a magic trick, or simply smile and say
“Rad and Cato said they would pay for mine, yes – all of my wine
Nate, and Dom and Tom said they would pay for mine.”

7. Now to the lord sing praises, all you within this place
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace
This holy tide of Christmas puts a smile upon our face
And we all love it here in Epernay, HIP HIP HOORAY!
Merry Christmas  BIZZLE to all in Epernay!
